Dear Eric,
Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns about the environmental impact of our flier distribution. The door hangers we distributed are made from recycled materials and are biodegradable, a decision we made foreseeing the possibility that some hangers may not be disposed of correctly.
But Eric, I’ve got to level with you here— there’s a much bigger sustainability problem in your laundry room. And that’s why we’re putting these door hangers out in the first place.
I’m sure you’re aware that energy use is the 800 pound gorilla in the sustainability conversation. According to the Department of Energy, 15% of the United States' energy consumption is spent drying things.
We are burning through millions of metric tons of fossil fuels and destabilizing the planet’s carbon cycle to literally dry things. And to drill down even further— 6% of our total energy consumption is wasted just on washing and drying laundry.
“The decisions we make now impact the planet we live on for our children and grandchildren…” - Eric
The fundamental issue is overconsumption. It’s really not efficient for every single household to run big, energy-intensive laundry machines. Running laundry machines with less than full loads is a major cause of excessive energy consumption, and people do it every day.
On top of that, Americans discard 9.4 million tons of electronic waste annually, a significant portion of which includes household appliances like washers and dryers. Hardly any of these appliances get recycled.
A manufactured feeling of convenience has duped 300 million Americans into buying, maintaining, and then throwing away energy-wasting appliances that have a detrimental impact on the environment. That’s not convenience; that's overconsumption and planned obsolescence.
At Tumble, we’re creating a future where laundry is done at specialized hubs, saving emissions, waste, and— also important— your time. By providing a push-button, on-demand service with doorstep delivery in under 4 hours, we're proving that at-home laundry is as unnecessary as it is wasteful.
No one wants to do laundry anyway. We’ve created a system so optimized that you’ll never have to again, and the planet will thank you for it.
We hold a deep commitment towards sustainability, and I will remind our canvassers to ensure they are being mindful of fallen flyers.
Thank you for helping the world strive for a more sustainable future.
Warm regards,
Scott Patterson
